10 Must Have Gadgets

Digital Trends came up with a list of 10 must have gadgets recently. The list included digital cameras, smart phones and gps, but at number 4 was the netbook. I have to agree, the smartbook is a great little tool and under $400 you can get a multiple use gadget. And with Mobian on the way, and Ubuntu netbook version out, there isn’t a better time then to have one.

  • Launchy is a free windows and linux utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!
  • FreeMind is a free mind mapping application written in Java. It enables the user to visualise ideas, projects, brainstorming, concepts, internet research, or any activity that benefits from having a structured overview.
  • If you need a calendar, look no further than Mozilla Sunbird. This is a a standalone version of the now discontinued Mozilla Calendar Extension.
  • Looking for an all in one? Check out Evolution, which provides integrated mail, addressbook and calendaring functionality to users of the GNOME desktop. Its user interface and feature set are similar to Microsoft Outlook. It is also compatible with Palm devices and smart phones.

Tech Data Doesn’t Sell Linux Netbooks

Because of low demand, Tech Data says they do not sell netbooks with Linux, only Windows. Although it’s true that Windows, mostly XP, have been the most popular on netbooks, quarter of netbooks sold worldwide last year came with Linux.

Tech Data tends to supply more resellers with business or government clients than those selling to consumers, so that could have a lot to do with it. And, Linux netbooks seem to be returned more often than XP Netbooks.

Eee PC 1008HA Looks Nice

asus-eee-pc-1008ha-closed

HotHardware.com has a first look at the first Eee PC netbook that looks nothing at all like its predecessors. All netbooks are rather square in design and frankly not that pleasant on the eye. Along comes the new Eee PC 1008HA. It has a nice seachell design which includes this netbook and the upcoming 1005HA.

Although visually pleasing, the specifications are about the sames as you’ve seen on practically every other netbook to emerge within the past six months.

From Asus:

Surf with the Eee PC Seashell—The beach brings to mind images of clear blue oceans, soft silk-like sand and, of course, the seashells. ASUS has taken one of nature’s most beautiful designs and combined it with the best of today’s innovations to provide users with the most stylishly functional Eee PC yet. Weighing just 1.1kg, the Eee PC Seashell is a highly portable companion that users can carry about, allowing them to surf the Internet, watch videos or keep in touch with their friends and family—even while at the beach. Equipped with a more-than-ample 10-inch display, ergonomically designed keyboard, intelligent energy management system and an intuitive multi-touch touch-pad, the Eee PC Seashell aims to provide users with the best mobile computing experience, wherever their journeys take them.
